I am kind of disturbed at how everyone is so quickly regarding Obama as our “black president.” If we’re really that progressive, we don’t have to acknowledge that he is African American. He is simply human, nothing more and nothing less. Do you identify yourself 100% on the color of your skin? Sexual orientation? Favorite food? Are you nothing more than the product of your religion or lack thereof? Would you introduce your friends as “My GAY friend,” or “my BLACK friend,” or “my ORTHODOX friend?”

I think you’re missing the point. The fact that he’s black is important. Beyond that, it’s historic. He’s not just a black president he is the black president. As in the only one that’s ever been.

Will he always be “the black president”? I hope not. First of all, I hope he won’t be the only one in the future and second, I hope he becomes known as the president who pulled our country out of the worst recession in 50 years and ended two wars, but that’s in the future. Today he’s the black president and for today that’s enough.
